Browse "Hugo is gay", a comic on coming out
How many things can be told through a comic that cannot be transmitted in a novel made of only the text? Today we find out with a short and interesting comic that talks about self -discovery and coming out: "Hugo is gay by Hugues Barthe" (Comicout, 2021, 102 pages), which is presented to us by the journalist Elisa Belotti.
This comic has as a subtitle In the skin of a young homosexual And he tells the story of a teenager named Hugo who, in the early 2000s, becomes aware of his sexual identity in a decidedly less visible context than today. Hugo grows in a school and family environment in which he feels different from the others, a sort of "black sheep", and above all he feels alone.
Elisa presenting this comic book recalls that "Despite serious and sometimes dramatic themes, such as the sense of solitude and disorientation, the tone of comics remains light and ironic, avoiding transforming Hugo's history into an overwhelming drama. The graphic style is essential, in black and white, with characters outlined by simple lines that make them recognizable without weighing down the cartoons. The delicate atmosphere reflects the tone of the narrative. The tables are dynamic and fragmentary, reflecting Hugo's inner journey and his uncertainty in confronting himself with a part of himself that he still does not know and does not know how to deal with.
... In the conclusion of the comic, we see a time leap to 2021, the year of the publication of the book. Hugo, now adult, faces the challenges of life and relationships, but his story, which we have followed with empathy, is no longer just his. It is the story of many other people that we can meet in everyday life.
