On April 5, 2025 in Florence with Vera Gheno to discover the "large language" to include the human
True gheno, linguist and author of "Call me like this: normality, diversity and all words in the middle"(The margin, 2023), is one of the main voices in Italy on language as a tool for social change. According to Gheno, language is not only a means of communication, but a form of power that can reflect or limit our vision of the world, but "The language must evolve to embrace diversity, and not to limit itself to rigid categories ".
Saturday 5 April 2025, Vera Gheno will be a guest in Florence of Free workshop "Inclusive language. The names of the human rainbow", as part of the meeting Corner stones del progetto Cornerstone, coordinato dall’associazione La Tenda di Gionata, che vuol far riflettere attraverso 8 incontri e testimonianze sui tanti modi per costruire comunità cristiane sempre più inclusive.
The Gheno workshop in Florence will be an opportunity to deepen the "large language" as a way to overcome discrimination and encourage mutual inclusion and understanding, especially in a Christian context that aims to be a refuge for everyone.
The broad language, as Gheno defines it, is what is not limited to a single point of view, but which embraces the plurality of experiences, respecting the various identities and allowing each one to feel recognized in their own uniqueness. A language that recognizes and respects each person for what it is contributes to creating a more fair society.
Gheno recently reiterated that the language must reflect the changing society. "We cannot remain anchored to the linguistic tradition that no longer reflects social reality. The language is constantly evolving, and for this reason we can make sure that language favors inclusiveness"(Gheno, 2023). Here, Gheno invites us to consider how an inclusive language can be an act of social justice, a means of recognizing all people without discrimination.
A particularly relevant reflection for those who live the Christian faith. Christianity teaches us that every person is created in the image and likeness of God, and therefore deserves respect, dignity and recognition. Adopting a language that recognizes the differences without judging or excluding becomes an act of love towards the other. Choosing to speak with words that include, that embrace diversity and that welcome people for what they are, is a concrete way to live the message of Christ.
