In an unusual sign of the Catholic Church's openness towards the LGBT+ community, the Vatican has included in the official online calendar for the next Holy Year of 2025 an event organized by an association that accompanies LGBT+ Catholics, their families and their pastoral workers.
The pellegrinaggio giubilare dell’associazione italiana “La Tenda di Gionata” è previsto per il prossimo 6 settembre 2025, alle ore 15, and is included among hundreds of events planned for the Jubilee, which are expected to bring some 32 million pilgrims to Rome next year.
Jonathan's tent, which aims to promote support for LGBT+ people (of their family members and the pastoral workers who follow them) in the Catholic Church, will organize (...) a Jubilee pilgrimage to St. Peter's Basilica (which will start from Castel S. Angelo and will end with the crossing of the Holy Door of San Pietro).
A Vatican official explained to Reuters that the inclusion of this pilgrimage in the Jubilee calendar does not necessarily imply direct support for the organized events. “These are not activities organized by the Vatican” declared Agnese Palmucci, spokeswoman for the Vatican's evangelization office, which is managing the organization of the Jubilee.
The Jubilee: an event of global reach
Rome will be the global center of the Catholic Holy Year, which will begin on December 24, Christmas Eve, and end on January 6, 2026. Jubilees of this type are normally celebrated once every 25 years. During the Jubilee, Catholic pilgrims who travel to Rome will be able to pass through the special "Holy Doors" opened in St. Peter's and three other basilicas in the city.
According to Palmucci, the Vatican's priority is to ensure that all pilgrims have the opportunity to cross the Holy Doors. “Once we have verified that there is a free date, we insert the pilgrimage into the general calendar,” he explained.
Pope Francis' approach towards the LGBT community
Pope Francis has been recognized as promoting a more inclusive approach of the Catholic Church towards the LGBT+ community. It has, in fact, allowed priests to bless same-sex couples in specific cases.
