Corner stories stories of Christian parents in front of the coming out of the children
John He would never have imagined herself so displaced. A man of faith, raised with the idea that the family was the beating heart of his life, has always tried to be a father present.
But when his son Marco, one evening in winter, said to him in a trembling voice: "Dad, I'm gay", the world has launched. Not because he did not love his son, but because he did not know what to do, what to say, how to reconcile his love with the faith he had always lived. He was afraid.
But the Gospel spoke to him of welcome, of unconditional love. So he started looking, reading, confronting each other. Today he knows that his faith has not decreased, on the contrary, he has strengthened in the ability to love like Christ loves.
Mary, affectionate and devoted mother, has always prayed for her daughter Sara to find happiness. But when one day, with tears in the eyes, Sara said to her: "Mom, I love another woman", Mary's heart filled himself on questions. He had never thought that his daughter's love could be different from what he had always imagined.
After a first moment of bewilderment, he understood that the most important thing was not to answer his doubts, but tighten his daughter and tell her: "You are always the greatest gift that God has made me". Since that day he started a path of understanding and listening, discovering that God's love makes no distinction.
Teresa, a deeply believer grandmother, lived all his life with the certainty that God is love. When her nephew told her that she did not recognize himself in the body with whom he was born and that he wanted to be called Luca, his heart filled himself with concern. Not for his faith, not for what people would have said, but for the suffering he had seen in his eyes.
"I don't understand everything, but I know I love you," he said to be tightening him to himself. Since then he has learned, day after day, to accompany him, discovering that God's love has no boundaries and that welcoming means opening his arms, not closing them.
If you too, like Giovanni, Maria and Teresa, you found yourself bringing questions, looking for a sense, wanting to reconcile faith and love for your LGBT children, this day is for you.
